The band was formed in the early part of 1996 in the basement of Dave Richards' house.
We didn't know what would come of that initial meeting, but several of
us had already developed a bond from playing together in other bands, and
we just knew there was something there worth keeping.
Of course, anyone who has been in a band will tell you that one of the toughest
parts is figuring out a name - one that's interesting, unique, and
not already taken! But one day two of us showed up at practice
with the same word - Run - and the same Bible verse - Hebrews 12:1.
...Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us...
Then through Bible Study, the Lord revealed a wonderful metaphor - not just a race,
but a relay race.
In a relay race, a runner is never alone but is surrounded by teammates who each
take a turn carrying the baton. Each runner has a purpose - the one who is the best
out of the blocks starts, the one with the best finishing sprint goes last, and
the middle runners each work to fend off the opponents. As one runs, the others
are there to encourage as they themselves get ready to run their part.
The team has a coach (the Father) who loves the team, teaching and inspiring them to reach new levels.
The baton (of faith) must be handed
from one person to another. Without the baton, the race cannot be won.
While the race is on, there are fans (like angels) in the stands
who are there to cheer and support the runners.
A race (like life) is never won in a single step, but rather each runner must take one step at a time,
focusing on that step while preparing for the next. Some steps can be very hard, even painful.
But there is no feeling in the world like finishing the race as the Champion.
And the race is only won if every person does their part.
So at the next practice, we were all pondering these things, trying to come up with
a name that incorporated the running idea. Then someone just blurted out
"Oh, just pick a name and run with it..."
And at that moment, we all knew...
Shortly thereafter, the relay race concept manifested itself in our theme song,
Run With It. Throughout the years, the name of the band has
played itself out in our lives. This is a band that understands real life,
the importance of sticking together, and the value of supportive relationships.
Together, we have gone through the sorrow of loss, the joy of rebirth,
the comings and goings of friendships, and the wonder of miracles.
For these reasons, one of the primary ministries of the band Run With It
has always been one of encouragement to those in the body of Christ, as well
as reaching out with compassion to those around us.
